Jill
Schultz McGannon earned her BFA and MFA in Drawing and Painting
at the University of Georgia, and later attended The School of the Art
Institute of Chicago. Her work can been seen at Mason Murer Gallery
in Atlanta, Georgia, Gwenda Jay/ Addington in Chicago, Illinois, Studio
E Gallery in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, and Addison Rowe Fine Art
in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She also has a line of prints through Art In
Motion that is sold at frame shops and through retailers all over the
world.
She paints realistic landscape paintings in oils, preferring to work
from life whenever possible. Ms. McGannon paints smaller landscapes
plein-air, spending time in Europe as well as Georgia and the Midwestern
United States. She began painting plein-air from the hilltops surrounding
Cortona, Italy in 1994 when she was Artist in Residence for the University
of Georgias painting program in Cortona. Larger works are executed
back home in the studio, using the small paintings and photographs as
resources. With these paintings, Ms. McGannon not only affords herself
time spent in nature, but also hopes to impress upon the viewer the
beauty and value of the diminishing landscape. The landscapes are painted
on surfaces that the artist creates using Venetian plaster, crackle
varnish, gold leaf, and pattern. These surfaces create a contemporary
context for realistic imagery.
